Bioassays were used to study the infectivity of cytoplasmic polyhedrosis viruses (CPVs), nuclear polyhedrosis viruses (NPVs) and entomopoxviruses (EPVs) contained in 16 nests of the paper waspPolistes hebraues F. in Réunion Island. Several virosis were propagated from 6 nest contents in 5 Lepidoptera:Catopsilia thauruma Saalmüller,Catopsilia florella F.,Callixena versicolora Mabille,Polydesma umbricola Boisduval andEagris sabadius Boisduval. Each of the previous species supported the development of one or two virosis and therefore, wasp nests must be considered as accumulating centres where infectivity of occluded entomoviruses is preserved. The accurate origin of the virosis propagated through bioassays was searched for using ecological investigations on similar natural diseases, REN analysis and a cross-transmission test onSpodoptera mauritia Boisduval. The nuclear polyhedrosis and one cytoplasmic polyhedrosis appearing in bioassays can be assigned respectively to viruses produced byC. thauruma andC. versicolora; the other virosis must be considered as developing in alternate or substitution hosts. Wasp nests could therefore be used to detect the presence of specific viruses in an environment and to collect new virus isolates.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. We have previously demonstrated pre-pupal diapause in a tropical population of Leptopilima boulardi Barbotin, Carton and Kelner-Pillault (Cynipidae, Hymenoptera), a larval parasitoid of Drosophila melanogaster Meigen. Prepupal diapause was induced by low temperature (17.5°C) but absent at 25°C; it was independent of photoperiod.
2. Four populations which originated from different latitudes (4°S to 44°N) exhibit the same response to temperature without any major genetic geographical variation.
3. In temperate areas, this diapause may permit a phenological and temporal coincidence between the parasitoid and its host whose larval growth is only possible for temperatures above 13°C.

The parasitic wasp Cephalonomia tarsalis parasitizes larvae of the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, which feed on wheat grains. In contrast to most other host–parasitoid systems studied so far, the grain beetles are highly mobile within their habitat, bulk of grains in grain stores. This should increase the wasps’ problem to locate the hosts. To study the host-finding strategy of C. tarsalis females, the reaction of wasps to different grain and host-derived odour sources was tested in a four-chamber-olfactometer. These experiments revealed that wasps were attracted by healthy grains and mechanically damaged grains. In direct comparison, healthy and mechanically damaged grains are equally attractive. Both potential sources of host-derived odours, host faeces and trail-traces of larvae on filter paper were attractive to the wasps. The response to trail-traces vanished 30 min after larvae had been removed from the filter paper. With respect to the specificity of the odours, it turned out that wasps were attracted to odours from the seed–host complexes from O. surinamensis and Oryzaephilus mercator and the non-host complex of larvae of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius in wheat grains. Odours from the seed–host complex were preferred. From these results, we hypothesize that host habitat location in C. tarsalis is achieved by using grain-derived odours. Within the habitat, wasps search for kairomones from host faeces and host trails. Following these larval trails finally leads wasps to their hosts.  相似文献

Borneo has a perhumid climate but occasional severe droughts have an important impact. Droughts may affect the composition and size structure of plant communities through differential mortality or, via their impact on the availability of plant resources, affect plant–animal interactions. From January to April 1998, northern Borneo suffered a very severe drought linked to the El Niño Southern Oscillation event of 1997–1998. In this article, the impacts of this drought on the rain forest at Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak, are considered with special reference to a keystone plant group, the figs. Small fires entered the edge of the forest from the roadside, killing saplings, climbers, and understory trees. Community-wide mortality for adult trees was 0–7 times higher than in nondrought years, with larger trees showing a greater proportional increase. In figs, mortality was significantly higher in pioneers, but hemiepiphytes and roadside species were unaffected. Phenology was substantially affected. Leaf and flower/fruit production decreased or ceased during the drought and increased suddenly following renewed rain. Pollinators of dioecious figs became locally extinct during the drought, and other plant–animal interactions may also have been disrupted. The frequency and severity of droughts has increased substantially in the past three decades, and climate models suggest this may be the result of global warming. The impacts of the 1998 drought at Lambir Hills National Park suggest that, should this trend continue, a substantial alteration of habitats and overall loss of biodiversity can be expected in Borneo.  相似文献

1. Insect galls are abnormal plant growths that develop in response to a stimulus provided by a galling insect. The nutrition hypothesis suggests that the concentrations of nutritive compounds in galls are changed to provide optimum nutrition for the larvae and adults of galling insects. 2. To test the nutrition hypothesis, we determined the concentrations of 20 free amino acids in galls and in galled and ungalled twigs of Quercus fabri during the larval and adult stages of Andricus mukaigawae using high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet–visible detection. 3. At the larval stage, the concentrations of 12 out of 20 amino acids in A. mukaigawae galls were significantly higher than those in galled and ungalled twigs. Asparagine and tryptophan were the most abundant nonessential and essential amino acids, respectively, in A. mukaigawae galls. 4. At the adult stage, the concentrations of most amino acids, except proline, were significantly lower in A. mukaigawae galls than in galled and ungalled twigs. The A. mukaigawae adults may not manipulate amino acid levels because the adults do not feed on galls. The decrease of amino acid levels in adult galls may be viewed as a depletion. 5. The composition of free amino acids in A. mukaigawae galls was significantly different from the composition in galled and ungalled twigs in both the larval and adult stages. 6. Our results may support the nutrition hypothesis. We suggest that a high concentration of proline in A. mukaigawae galls may protect larvae and adults from plant defense responses.  相似文献
